Families Bowled Over by New Activity on Hamilton Island
|
| Hamilton Island (www.hamiltonisland.com.au) on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has introduced another family friendly activity with the opening of its nine-pin ‘Kegel bowling’ centre. |
Hamilton Island offers guests a choice of over 60 different activities (see link) ranging from snorkelling and sailing to cuddling koalas and quad biking. Its newest activity, nine-pin Kegel bowling, is ideal for families, with:
- Much smaller and lighter balls that weigh just 2.8kg
- Balls with just two holes, so they fit everyone regardless of age or size
- A variety of games to play – rather than just aiming to knock down all of the pins – making it suitable for children as young as three years of age
The game uses an interactive score board which allows different variations of the game including a children’s menu. Adults can play a standard bowling game, whilst the children can be on the lane beside them playing a game tailored to their age group.
Guests don’t have to wear bowling shoes or have any special skills or experience to have fun. Pricing is per lane, not per player, with a maximum of six people per lane making it a good value, all-weather activity for families or groups of friends.
After dark, the bowling centre transforms with glow in the dark lanes, pins and balls. The air-conditioned centre has seven lanes, an amusement arcade and a fully licensed bar with snack food. The cost is AU$39 (around £25) per lane for 30 minutes and AU$69 (around £44) per lane for an hour. The Island Bowling Centre is open daily from 2pm until 10pm and is located in the Resort Centre.
Nine-pin Kegel bowling is the oldest bowling game in the world. It dates back to the year 1157 where it was commonly played in monasteries but is most recently associated with South Australia where it was developed by German settlers in the 19th century. The word ‘kegel’ comes from the German for skittle. Ten-pin bowling was invented in 1868.
