Test Your Metal Against Australia's Ironman
26 September 2011: Excited by London 2012? Aspiring athletes looking for their next big challenge can sign up for the Fujifilm Hamilton Island Triathlon (www.hamiltonisland.com.au/triathlon) which will take place in November on Hamilton Island in the pulsing heart of Queensland’s Coral Sea, a training ground for Olympians such as Australian surf and swim champion, Ky Hurst.

Participants can learn from the best sportsmen in the business prior to personally stepping up for the physical challenge of a triathlon. They’ll be up against the likes of Hurst, arguably Australia's most successful Ironman and one of two confirmed Aussie reps in the open water events at the London 2012 Olympics (read more).

The Fujifilm Hamilton Island Triathlon, held annually in November, takes in some of the Whitsunday’s most iconic locations for a sporting epic which includes:
  • Fujifilm Hamilton Island Triathlon, 19 November (read more)
  • 2km Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim, 20 November (read more)
  • Junior Fujifilm Hamilton Island Triathlon and Junior Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim (read more)
Fujifilm Hamilton Island Triathlon, 19 November – The Triathlon showcases the undulating landscape of Hamilton Island against the stunning backdrop of the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands.

Contestants can look forward to:

  • A 750 metre swim of picture-perfect Catseye Bay
  • A 20km cycle around the southern part of Hamilton Island, encompassing the airport runway
  • A 5km run around the marina and resort sides of Hamilton Island

Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim2km Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim, 20 November – For those not finished off by the Triathlon, a 2km swim off legendary Whitehaven Beach is just the ticket. World famous for its pristine white sand stretching for seven empty kilometres and crystal-clear water, Whitehaven Beach is on neighbouring Whitsunday Island and is regularly voted one of the world’s top beaches. Nestled in the beautiful surrounds of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s seven natural wonders, this annual ocean swim meet is set to become as iconic and famous as its location.

Younger sports stars can participate in the Junior Fujifilm Hamilton Island Triathlon, a fun swim, bike and run around the Hamilton Island village, open to children aged under 14 years, whilst the Junior Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim is a 750m or 350m equivalent for children 13 years and under.

However, the weekend of sport is not all for serious athletes. The Dent Dash on Sunday the 20th November is a non-competitive social event where participants can either run or walk 18 holes of the spectacular Hamilton Island Golf Course which is approximately 10.6km. If that's too energetic, they can choose between the front nine holes (4.2km) or the back nine (4.6km).
