This year’s event saw 195 yachts take to the water – ranging from small cruisers to record-breaking supermaxis. A steady south-easterly tradewind provided ‘champagne sailing conditions’ for much of the week.

The big guns of Australian ocean yacht racing came out to test their metal including the 30.2 metre long supermaxis ‘Wild Oats XI’ - owned by winemaker Bob Oatley, who also owns Hamilton Island and - and ‘Investec Loyal’. The most radical offshore racing yacht to be launched in decades, named simply ‘Q’, also made its debut.

FAMOUS FACES
An impressive array of familiar faces attending the sparkling party schedule, including British-born Hollywood actress, Naomi Watts, novelist Kathy Lette, British supermodel turned designer Gail Elliott, Australian designer Collette Dinnigan, Australian celebrity chef Matt Moran and UK publishing guru Deke Miskin with his designer wife Eve, there to launch her own new swimwear label, Miskin Martinez.

The oldest trophy in the history of international sport, the America’s Cup, was flown to Australia from San Francisco to coincide with the 160th anniversary of the first awarding of the Cup in 1851. It was displayed during Audi Hamilton Island Race Week at the Hamilton Island Yacht Club alongside the Admiral’s Cup, the first time ever that two of the most significant trophies in the sport of sailing have been displayed together.
