COME FACE-TO-FACE WITH A GREAT WHITE SHARK – Run by fourth-generation fisherman Matt Waller, Adventure Bay Charters (www.adventurebaycharters.com.au) claims to be the only company offering a bait-free cage diving experience which brings participants face-to-face with the legendary great white shark. The cruises through the Thorny Passage to Shark Bay in South Australia’s Neptune Islands also promise dolphin and bird sightings.

Working for Port Lincoln based  Calypso Star Charters (http://www.calypsostarcharter.com.au) James’ passion for boats and marine life is well sated. A typical day for James on board the MV Calypso Star includes cruising the waters around Neptune Island spotting and swimming with sharks, organising diving equipment and sharing scientific facts about these legendary predators.

According to James’ colleague, skipper Andrew Wright, there has never been a better time to catch sight of a great white. Calypso’s one-day charters have recorded a year-to-date success rate of 96% with guests seeing an average of six great white sharks on each trip. Some have measured up to five metres long. Andrew says: “Shark activity during January and February was excellent and there is no sign of things slowing down. Our peak winter season is fast approaching and we generally see larger female sharks during this time.”

ARTISANS OF BAROSSA BRING EXCLUSIVE WINES UNDER ONE ROOF – The owners of seven independent wineries in the Barossa Valley, each producing small batches of high quality, hand-crafted wines, have formed Artisans of Barossa (www.artisansofbarossa.com) in order to promote and protect their diverse range of exciting products. Small producers Hobbs, John Duval, Massena, Schwarz Wine Company, Sons of Eden, Spinifex and Teusner, would not otherwise have a cellar door through which to promote their wines. However, by joining forces to create Artisans of Barossa, their wines are now available for tasting under one roof at a joint cellar door on the outskirts of Tanunda.

DA VINCI MACHINES EXHIBITION COMES TO ADELAIDE - The Adelaide Event and Exhibition Centre will host an exhibition of more than 60 of Leonardo Da Vinci’s major inventions from April 16th - June 26th. The “Da Vinci Machines Exhibition” includes flying machines, robotics and interactive displays as well as information on the original Renaissance Man and beautiful reproductions of many of his most famous paintings such as the “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper”. www.aeec.com.au

LAKE EYRE VOTED TOPS IN ‘THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU DIE’ FEATURE - Seeing Lake Eyre in flood has long been thought of as a once in a lifetime experience. However, having flooded for three consecutive years, there are even more opportunities to view this amazing phenomenon “Australian Traveller” magazine rates number three in its top "100 Things To Do Before You Die". www.southaustralia.com/LakeEyreNationalPark.aspx

NULLARBOR SAFEGUARDED UNDER WILDERNESS PROTECTION ACT - An area of the Nullarbor stretching almost 200 kms from Western Australia across the Great Australian Bight is to be safeguarded under the Wilderness Protection Act with the land restored to its condition prior to European settlement to maintain habitat and conserve threatened species.

This doubles the amount of land in South Australia now under environmental protection to 1.8 million hectares and will help to conserve the famous arid, treeless plane and its towering Bunda Cliffs. It will also safeguard important habitat for species such as the rare Australian sea lion, the southern hairy-nosed wombat, the pale knob-tailed gecko, the vulnerable slender-billed thornbill and more than 390 species of plants.
