Pichi Richi Camel Tours is located in the heart of the splendid Flinders Ranges in a small town called Quorn, just 350 kms north of Adelaide. Two-day camel safari – Highlights include two camel rides per day through awe-inspiring scenery, including riding beneath Mt Arden across high plateaux with views of the Spencer Gulf and the vast salt expanse of Lake Torrens, over 200 kms long and 20 kms wide. Spot wildlife such as kookaburra’s fishing in waterholes, kangaroos and wallabies, and stay overnight in a native bush camp. In the evening the chef prepares a delicious three course meal complete with Australian wines and beer, before guests relax in their swag under the stars for a great night’s sleep. Prices are from AUD$550 (approx £332) per person for the two-day safari, including all meals, transport, guides and bush camp accommodation.
Four-day camel safari – This extended tour allows guests to further explore this pristine environment, spending three nights under the stars in the bush camp. Highlights include visiting Warren’s Gorge to see rock-wallabies traversing South Gorge with its wide river beds filled with towering gums dwarfed on either side by sheer cliffs, and riding to the edge of Buckaringa Wilderness Sanctuary. Prices are from AUD$1,200 (approx £725) per person for the four-day safari, including all meals, transport, guides and bush camp accommodation.
“Camel to Candlelight Dinner” tour – Guests enjoy an hour long camel ride through the bush to a beautiful cottage where the award winning chef has prepared a special candlelit dinner. Guests are treated to a chilled glass of champagne as they dismount their camels before being taken to their table for their three course dinner. Possible dishes include such delights as desert herb encrusted steak or lemon myrtle baked barramundi. Prices are from AUD$175 (approx £106) per person including the camel ride, three course dinner with wine, beer and coffee and return transport to the camel farm.
Sunset tour – This amazing camel ride starts off under clear blue skies that slowly turn to shades of pink, red and orange, offering a great backdrop to view the wildlife that appears at this time of the day such as kangaroos and wallabies. Guests experience the stillness of Australia’s oldest arid mountain range and the fragrant warm breezes filled with the smells of the grass tree flowers. The guide will also point out various food sources along the way used by the Aboriginal people for thousands of years. The price is AUD$65 (approx £40) per person and includes the two-hour guided camel tour.
“Ocean to Outback “tour – This ½ day tour starts with a leisurely cruise on the ‘Champagne’ along the base of the Ranges offering the chance to see dolphins frolicking in the ocean. This is followed by a camel tour spotting kangaroos and emus as the sun slowly sets. Guests are then treated to a two-course gourmet bush dinner and bush food walk. The price is AUD$145 (approx £86) per person and includes the boat trip, camel ride and dinner, plus transport back to the camel farm.
Full-day tour – This camel tour takes guests on a trail around the base of Devil’s Peak, an area completely inaccessible by vehicles which follows an ancient creek bed lined on both sides by timeless river red gums. Wildlife that can be spotted includes wild goats, emus and kangaroos. A light lunch is included in the package. The price is AUD$175 (approx £106) per person including the camel tour and lunch.
Half-day tour – This camel tour explores the fabulous Pichi Richi Valley riding a gradual descent into the valley, flanked on one side by the inspiring Dutchman escarpment. The trail is an ancient dry creek bed and wildlife is clearly visible undisturbed by the quiet padding of the camel. This tour also gives an insight into early European settler lifestyle. The price is AUD$95 (approx £58) per person including the camel tour and afternoon tea.
Camel rides – For those that are really short on time but still want to experience the thrill of riding a camel in the Outback the operator offers ½ and one hour rides where guests can view the Pichi Richi Valley or the Devil’s Peak. The price is AUD$25 (approx £15) for ½ and AUD$35 (approx £21) for an hour’s ride.
All of the above tours, apart from the ½ and one hour camel rides, are based on a minimum of two people with prices quoted for the specific tour. The operator however also offers bronze, silver and gold packages that include the tour or safari, plus transfers from Adelaide (bus or flight depending on package), accommodation and some meals.
