Sustainable Holidays Reach New Heights on Dartmoor
Continuously seeking ways of offering greener holidays, Woodovis Park in Devon (www.woodovis.com) has gone to new heights to harness Dartmoor’s natural energy, with electricity-generating PV panels now installed on the swimming pool roof.
The new ‘photovoltaic’ panels sit alongside the solar thermal panels already used to heat the swimming pool, and will generate enough electricity from the sun’s rays to provide power to the building. When the pool room’s not in use, the electricity will be put back into the national grid. This new energy saving measure comes in addition to the 160-foot bore hole dug on site last summer, which supplies all the water for the award-winning park.
How the PV panels work
Other innovative measures recently introduced include:

  • Installing a new touch screen information board for guests, with details on everything from local attractions and wildlife to weather, significantly reducing the number of paper leaflets on site.
  • Offering free access to online newspapers - wireless broadband is available throughout the site for an extra fee, but this is waived for anyone wanting to read the news online, cutting down on the carbon footprint of having papers delivered to the park.
Family days out by bike from Woodovis ParkWoodovis Park has recently achieved glowing recognition for its environmental excellence, securing Gold in both the David Bellamy Conservation Award and Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Visitors to the independently run park are encouraged to contribute wherever possible to preserving the environment, with a raft of ’give the car a rest’ days out available, from cycle hire to ferry and train options to get out and explore the beautiful Tamar Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site.
