Canoeing (www.canoetamar.co.uk) – Take a trip with a qualified guide along the scenic River Tamar – which divides Devon and Cornwall – in a Canadian canoe. Paddle your way through some of the most beautiful scenery in England, past steeply sloping woodland, old quays, mine chimneys, farms and boatyards. GPS training (www.compassworks.co.uk) – Unravel the mysteries of navigation with an Introduction to GPS course or sign up for a Map and Compass Practice Day. Combining a mix of indoor and outdoor activities with practical exercises, the courses cover some of the most difficult map reading terrain in the UK. Courses cost from £30 per person per day.
Rock climbing (www.barnclimbingwall.co.uk) – The specially crafted, indoor climbing barn is the perfect place to try your hand at rock climbing. There are a series of courses available from one and a half hour Taster Sessions to six week beginners’ courses and one to one coaching. The Taster Sessions cost £12.50 per person.
Photography (www.tonycobley.com) – Learn how to capture the rugged beauty of Dartmoor on film. Professional photographer, Tony Cobley, offers personal tuition as well as group creative workshops. Suitable for all levels, the digital courses cost from £75 per day.
Soap making (www.oddsandsuds.com) – Try your hand at soap making, at the bespoke Odds and Suds workshop in Tavistock. Founder, Jenny Elesmore, shares her tips on making and decorating soaps as sold in her popular shops in Tavistock and Ashburton. The workshops are for a maximum of six people and include a delicious lunch at Brown’s Hotel as well as a six months’ supply of soap to take home. From £125 per person.
