Follow in the Footsteps of Spielberg: Take Off to Dartmoor For Sizzling Late Summer Festivals |
| Better known for its ponies than Hollywood A-listers, Dartmoor is soon to be in the spotlight thanks to a recent visit by Steven Spielberg, on location for his next blockbuster, 'The War Horse'. Follow in the great man’s shoes and enjoy a September staycation at award-winning Woodovis Park (www.woodovis.com). |
September brings fewer people and some of the best camping weather to West Devon. It’s also prime time to enjoy some late summer festival fun. Whether you want to take to the skies over Dartmoor in a hot air balloon or tuck into some fiery Devon chillies, you’re guaranteed a sizzling September. Dates for the diary include:
- The West Country Balloon Fiesta, 4th and 5th September Read more
- The Tavistock Summer Food Festival, 11th and 12th September Read more
- Widecombe Fair, 14th September Read more
- Tour of Britain in Tavistock, 14th and 15th September Read more
It’s also a great month to enjoy lower prices for a stay at Woodovis Park. A touring pitch costs just £11 per night – saving £5 per night on high season rates - plus £7 per person per night. Or enjoy some extra TLC in the fully-insulated camping pod for £40 per night (sleeps four) – saving £10 per night.
The West Country Balloon Fiesta, 4th-5th September, returns to the market town of Tavistock for the first time in three years. Marvel at the site of hordes of balloons heading out over Dartmoor’s rolling hills and tors, or even take to the skies for a sunrise or sunset hot air balloon ride. www.westcountryballoons.com
The Tavistock Summer Food Festival, 11th -12th September, offers the ideal chance to taste, try, buy and watch demonstrations from top Devon chefs. Visitors can also mull over the eternal question as to what makes a Devonshire cream tea (in Devon the cream is used first followed by the jam, the reverse of the rival Cornish cream tea), with a special festival tea at the Bedford Hotel. www.tavistockfoodfestival.co.uk
Widecombe Fair, 14th September, made legendary by the folk song describing the adventures of ‘Uncle Tom Cobley and all’, Widecombe is home to one of the most celebrated Dartmoor fairs. Visitors can look forward to sheep shearing, tug of war, heavy horses and downhill racing in a picture perfect setting at the heart of the moor. www.widecombefair.com
Tour of Britain in Tavistock, 14th-15th September, will once again take place over eight days, beginning in Rochdale on Saturday 11th September and finishing at the heart of London on Saturday 18th September. Stage Five begins in Devon, heading up onto Dartmoor from Tavistock on 15th September. The town will come to life with a pre-race party on the eve of the race, with live music from local bands including Dartmoor folk hero, Seth Lakeman. www.tourofbritain.co.uk
