Local Holiday Park Digging Deep To Offer Greener Holidays
Woodovis Park (www.woodovis.com) at Gulworthy near Tavistock is going to great lengths – or depths – to make sure holidaymakers enjoy a more sustainable Dartmoor break.
Work in progress on the borehole at Woodovis ParkThe independent, owner-run site already holds a Dartmoor First Award in recognition of its commitment to sustaining Dartmoor and its special qualities, and is awaiting grading for a David Bellamy Conservation Award – given in recognition of holiday parks committed to preserving and enhancing the natural world – as well as the Green Business Tourism Scheme. Woodovis Park is now set to notch up further eco credentials with the on-site 180 foot borehole.

Preliminary tests by Stenlakes of Launceston, who are carrying out the work, have confirmed that there's plenty of water to be had from the borehole. The next stage will be the installation of a filter system to ensure the water is safe to drink. The water will then be left to run to waste for a few days, followed by a further sample being taken. The end result will hopefully be that all on site water will come from the borehole, including the (solar heated) swimming pool.

“We’re really excited about the prospect of having our very own water supply,” says owner Dorothy Lewis. “This is just one of a raft of measures we’ve been putting in place to ensure Woodovis Park is a greener place to stay, from using energy efficient light bulbs to stocking locally sourced supplies in the camp shop,” she adds.

Other recent sustainable measures introduced include free online newspapers for customers. “Because we’re in a rather remote spot we’ve never been able to find a satisfactory way of getting newspapers delivered for our guests,” explains Dorothy. “Once we added up how much time and petrol we would spend for one of us to go and fetch the papers, not to mention the trees used to print them, it amounted to a substantial carbon footprint.

“Wireless broadband has been available for an extra fee throughout the site for some time but we have now waived this cost for anyone wanting to read the news online,” she says.
