For Truly Wild Bird Encounters Flock to Western Kenya
|
| The Zambezi Safari and Travel Company (www.zambezi.com) has introduced a new, privately guided mobile safari into the wilds of Western Kenya for some of the best birding on the African continent. Visiting areas more frequented by our feathery friends than tourists, including Mt Elgon National Park and Kakamega Forest Reserve, this safari is guaranteed to have wildlife enthusiasts and ‘twitchers’ in a flutter! |
Led by one of Kenya’s most experienced guides, Steve Carey, the 10 night trip takes in a fantastic variety of wildlife and birdlife throughout the Rift Valley with opportunities for game drives and walks as well as cultural visits. Accommodation ranges from a luxurious 1940’s farmhouse overlooking Mt Kenya to camping out lakeside under the stars. The safari is conducted mostly by road in a custom-made Toyota Landcruiser focusing on remote spots with incredible birdlife, unusual animals and fascinating cultures.
Highlights include:
- Spectacular birding as well as huge herds of elephants, zebra, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena in the 24,000 acre private ranch of Sosian in Laikipia
- Greater and lesser flamingos, black-necked grebe, steppe eagles, fish eagles and other raptors on Lake Bogoria. Up to a million flamingos have been recorded at peak times whilst hundreds of thousands are commonly sighted
- 470 species of birds in the Lake Baringo area, many specific to the Rift Valley and northern Kenya
- Volcanic lava tube caves, cave dwelling elephants, forest birds and unusual mammals such as the bongo, giant forest hog and African golden cat in Mt Elgon National Park
- 350 species of forest tree and 300 species of birds (including the blue headed bee eater) as well as flying squirrels, forest duikers, potto and many types of monkey in the little known Kakamega Forest Reserve, one of the most important birding and primate areas in Kenya and the only remnant piece of Congo forest eco-system in the country
The 10 night Western Kenya Privately GuidedSafari costs from £3,310 per person and includes seven nights in cottages/chalets, three nights light-weight camping, all food, local drinks and laundry, flights from Nairobi to Nanyuki, Kisumu to Nairobi, road transfers in between (excludes international flights). The above itinerary is flexible and can be tailor-made to suit time and budget and individual preference. An optional extension to one of the islands on Lake Victoria, from where it is possible to extend further and fly by small aircraft to the Masai Mara for a few days, is also available.
