Due to the incredible popularity of The Ghan’s recently introduced three-night/four-day Ghan Expedition journey, the 2017 season will see departures double with an extended season covering six months.

Great Southern Rail, the company responsible for The Ghan, announced that every Darwin to Adelaide departure between 3rd May and 25th October 2017 will be a Ghan Expedition experience. By extending the regular Ghan journey by one night and one day means travellers now have more off-train experiences to enjoy.

Featured en route destinations are Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy with the following tour options:

  • A cruise on the ancient Nitmiluk Gorge or an Outback Experience in Katherine
  • A scenic flight over Uluru, a base tour and picnic lunch
  • An outback dinner in Alice Springs
  • A full day in the legendary underground opal mining town of Coober Pedy

Great Southern Rail’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Steve Kernaghan, said:

“The Ghan Expedition is our newest and most ambitious initiative in recent years. The feedback from our guests has been extraordinary. We believe the popularity is down to the fact that this journey offers unmatched access to many of Australia’s iconic outback destinations in just four days.

“In that time, our guests are well looked after – with gourmet meals, immersive tours and quality service. We have removed all the stresses of cross continental travel, making it an altogether more relaxing and enjoyable experience.”

The Ghan Expedition made its debut on the 23rd May 2015. Its inaugural three-month run was a critical and commercial success with a sold-out Platinum Service season. The Ghan Expedition returns this year for another three months which will start on the 3rd August 2016, running until the 26th October.

The regular Ghan service, which operates outside these dates for the rest of the year, runs between Darwin and Adelaide, and visa versa, and takes three days and two nights.

Great Southern Rail will also introduce seasonal fares for the 2017/18 season. High, shoulder and low seasonal fares for both The Ghan and Indian Pacific will offer a breadth of choice and the opportunity to save up to AUD$550 per person on a Gold Service journey, dependent on time of travel*.

Advance Purchase bookings will offer further savings of up to 20% off adult fares on a limited number of spaces when booked more than six months in advance.

The Ghan and Indian Pacific can be booked as part of a wider Australian itinerary with the following tour operators:

*AUD$550 per person discount based on Indian Pacific Sydney to Perth journey, or vice versa, travelling in Gold Service Twin. Difference is between high season fare and low season fare.
